Burnout is a Systemic Problem

Burnout is often framed as an individual resilience problem.
But research in organizational psychology suggests something else.
Burnout is usually produced by misaligned systems.
For example:
A company says it values collaboration.
But rewards individual performance.
Or leadership says work-life balance matters.
But celebrates people who answer emails at midnight.
In family therapy they call this a double bind.
A system that sends conflicting signals.
Over time, people learn something important:
What the system rewards is what actually matters.
Not what the system says.
Burnout doesn’t happen because people are weak.
It happens because systems make sustainable behavior impossible.
